The Heavy Lifting of Global Logistics
Whether you are tracking your fitness progress, measuring baking ingredients, or calculating shipping freight costs, weight conversion is essential.
The Metric System
The metric system calculates mass in grams (g). Because it is a base-10 system, moving between units requires only moving the decimal point:
- Milligram (mg): 1/1,000th of a gram. (A grain of sand).
- Gram (g): The base unit. (A paperclip).
- Kilogram (kg): 1,000 grams. (A liter of water).
- Metric Ton (t): 1,000 kilograms. (A small car).
The Imperial System
Used heavily in the United States and the UK, these units scale differently, requiring strict memorization or a dedicated calculator tool:
- Ounce (oz): 1/16th of a pound. (About 28.3 grams).
- Pound (lb): 16 ounces. (About 0.45 kilograms).
- Stone (st): 14 pounds.
