Understanding Time Units

We rely on time measurements every day, but converting between them manually can be surprisingly tedious due to the non-decimal nature of hours and minutes.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Step 1: Input Duration - Enter the amount of time you want to convert (e.g., 500 minutes).
  2. Step 2: Choose Interval - Switch between small units like seconds or large units like years effortlessly.
  3. Step 3: Verify Conversion - See the precise decimal or integer result for your specific timeframe.

How the time converter works

Every unit on this page is defined as a number of seconds: a minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 3,600 seconds and a day is 86,400 seconds. The converter first turns your value into seconds, then divides by the number of seconds in the unit you chose. Going through one common unit keeps every pair of units consistent, whichever way you convert.

Milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds work the same way, only with fractions of a second. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second, which is why 1,000 ms equals 1 second. Programmers meet these units in timeouts, animation delays and performance logs.

Worked examples

2.5 hours in minutes

  • 2.5 hours × 3,600 = 9,000 seconds
  • 9,000 seconds ÷ 60 = 150 minutes

90 minutes in hours

  • 90 minutes × 60 = 5,400 seconds
  • 5,400 seconds ÷ 3,600 = 1.5 hours

3 days in hours

  • 3 days × 86,400 = 259,200 seconds
  • 259,200 seconds ÷ 3,600 = 72 hours

Tips and common mistakes

  • Weeks, months and years are the units to watch. A week is always 7 days, but months run from 28 to 31 days and years from 365 to 366, so any conversion involving months or years is an approximation.
  • To find the exact time between two calendar dates, count the days on a calendar instead of converting units.
  • Check the unit you mean before you convert. Short symbols such as m can stand for minutes or months, and that is a common source of mistakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A standard calendar year (365 days) contains 8,760 hours. A leap year (366 days) contains 8,784 hours.
Because months have varying lengths (28 to 31 days), this tool calculates a 'Month' as an exact mathematical average of 30.44 days.
There are exactly 86,400 seconds in a standard 24-hour day.
